What is a Neonatal Nurse?

A neonatal nurse is a formally trained and qualified adult or child nurse, who tends to small babies within the specialist treatment units, which include NICU, SBCU as well as paediatric wards.

Nurses who fulfil these roles will have completed their qualifications and worked within specialist care for a period of at least 6 months before being accepted into this role. Midwives can also apply for these roles, should they meet the basic requirements.

To apply for neonatal nursing roles, you need to be a registered band 5 nurse, with trackable work experience or training in Children's nursing, basic life support, and handling.

What are the duties associated with being a neonatal nurse?

The duties of being a nurse remain consistent through many specialties, and focused units; these include tending to patients' hygiene requirements, ensuring they are feeding well, maintaining a clean environment, monitoring and administering medication, wound care, as well as advocating a patient’s rights.
